My grandfather from Maine has been here for a week staying at my parents. We went up on Monday night to have dinner and visit with them. My grandpa started talking about his service in the Army during WWII. It was so intriguing to listen to the stories he told. I have never heard him talk so openly and for so long about his days in the Army. He mentioned the Battle of the Bulge and talked about his time he spent in Germany during the war. He was a cook for the army, and he said the men always had to eat so even when they were in trucks moving across the country he had to be in the back of the truck cooking and preparing food for the men. He said sometimes all of the food would be eaten and there was nothing left for him to eat afterwards, but that was his job and it had to be done so the men could eat. Grandpa Swiss will be 89 years old this June. It's incredible to hear him talking about things that happened so long ago he remembered. He talked a little bit about his first marriage and losing her to cancer and his remarriage to my grandmother. I heard from my mom for the first time the story of how my grandparents met.
Hearing about Grandpa's life over the past 90 years made me start thinking about what the next decades will hold for me. It seems that usually we, or at least myself, don't think that far into the future. I get excited to think about a year ahead or maybe 5 years from now where we'll be and what we'll be doing. How many of us think about eternity? Life on earth is only for a short time. Looking ahead at it from 23 years old right now seems like I have forever ahead, but truly eternity will be forever. Eternity spent praising God our Creator. Life is a precious gift. I am so thankful to be spending this lifetime with the love of my life. All of life is a journey and I really look forward to every step that Caleb & I take as we grow older together. I believe God does have a purpose for each detail in a person's life.
As for Colorado plans right now, Caleb has applied for multiple nursing jobs in hospitals around Denver. He's heard back from some saying they are looking for someone who already has nursing experience. Right now, there are still 8 jobs he's applied for that he's waiting to hear back on. Hopefully some will result in a phone interview! That's what we are waiting for. :)
