My post title “To Pikes Peak or Bust" may not be too
accurate. We may not actually live near Pikes Peak, which is the 14k footer
mountain peak in Colorado Springs, but I'm sure once we move that will be one
of the things we go see. I drove up Pikes Peak with my parents and brother and
it was amazing.
50states.com is a pretty neat website with interesting facts
about different states. Colorado had so many interesting facts but here are a
few of the ones that stuck out to me. So here you go!
1) Colorado is the only state in history to turn down the
Olympics. In 1976 the Winter Olympics were planned to be held in Denver. 62% of
all state Voters choose at almost the last minute not to host the Olympics,
because of the cost, pollution and population boom it would have on the State
Of Colorado, and the City of Denver.
2) Denver, lays claim to the invention of the cheeseburger.
The trademark for the name Cheeseburger was awarded in 1935 to Louis
Ballast.
3) Colorado has 222 state wildlife areas.
4) Colorado contains 75% of the land area of the U.S. with
an altitude over 10,000 feet.
5) Denver has the largest city park system in the nation with
205 parks in city limits and 20,000 acres of parks in the nearby mountains.
6) Mesa Verde features an elaborate four-story city carved
in the cliffs by the Ancestral Pueblo people between 600 and 1300 A.D. The
mystery surrounding this ancient cultural landmark is the sudden disappearance
of the thousands of inhabitants who created the more than 4,000 identified
structures.
7) Katherine Lee Bates wrote “America the Beautiful” after
being inspired by the view from Pikes Peak.
As time goes by, Caleb & I are beginning to wonder if we'll be staying here for another year and Colorado may have to wait for us until 2013. We feel as though the only reason we would stay in Greenville is if an amazing emergency room nursing job opened up for him here. It'd be awesome if he could get right into the emergency room as a first year nurse, and with that experience it would help him get into an ER in Colorado without having to work in another department he is not as excited about. These are exciting times to wait and see what doors will be opened for us. No matter what happens we will still be saying to Colorado or bust!
One of those beautiful spots is Blue Lake. See this URL for details on how to hike there: http://www.protrails.com/trails/view/30
ReplyDeleteA nice day hike -- trail-head easily reached from the Boulder area. Remember the painting over the mantle at our house Peggy is working on -- this is the place!
Uncle Scott, I can't wait to hike to Blue Lake and see that beauty in person :) It's great to have family who know the great places to visit in Colorado!
