Manitou Springs & Waldo Canyon Trail Hike

Caleb & I went to Manitou Springs last week. This is a really neat town which is built into the green mountainous hills of the Rockies. It is only 8 miles from us so we just had to check it out with it being so close. This was also our first drive into the mountains since we've moved here. WOW! It was a breathtaking view for us. We drove through the mountains in December when we went out to visit Krista in Gunnison, but the drive going into the mountains is so different now in May than it was then. Everything is very green right now and the mountains rise up high and fast once you get within a mile from them. Next thing you know while you're driving is that you're right in the town built into the hills. The town has natural mineral springs that they have drilled so it comes up as a spring where people can just drink out of them or bring a cup. The water tastes like soda water though so it's not what you expect. I first drank some without reading the plaque, and I said it tasted almost salty. That's when Caleb informed me while he was reading the sign that it was actually natural soda water with different minerals.  Here are a few pictures of Manitou Springs.

Today we drove back up past Manitou Springs to hike the Waldo Canyon Trail in the mountains. One place said the trail was 6.2 miles and another place said it was 7 miles. It didn't matter to me whichever distance was right because either one is long hiking mountain trails at 8,000 feet. Caleb & I made it to the 2-mile mark and I was wondering if I should really try to do the whole 7 mile hike because I was already breathing really hard. The only thing I was worried about was getting too high and having a hard time breathing and having to hike back down. Well, Caleb encouraged me and said we could take as many breaks as I needed or we could turn around if I felt I really needed to. I decided to push myself and keep on going. I was so thankful I decided to keep going because the hike was beautiful and we had so much fun. We were hiking for 4 hours together and that was so awesome just me and Caleb out in the mountains together. The 2 miles really were the worst part of the hike because the altitude increase was more sudden and more of a strenuous up-hill hike at the beginning. The hike overall was pretty strenuous, but it felt so great to be hiking through the mountains amazed at our views. I felt pretty adjusted to the altitude as we kept going. Here are some pictures from today's hike.
